Clouds for Breakfast

So this morning, just after we awoke, the munchkin stood at the sliding glass doors in the living room, looked out at the sky in the backyard and said,

“Daddy, there aren’t any clouds!”

My half-awake self, confused, suggested, “Oh honey, I’m sure there are some clouds out there.”

“No, Daddy, there’s not!” with genuine dismay, “There’s NOT!!”

Uh. Come on, brain. “Why don’t we look out front?”

Her face lights up, “Yeah!!”

Down the hallway to the front door and we open it to reveal a sky with some lovely, fluffy clouds outlined in golden morning light. “Clouds, daddy!” Then she turned a troubled face up to me, “But I can’t fly!”

“Well, let’s pretend.”

Face lights again, ” YEAHH!!” Arms swing up over the head, Superman fashion, and she checks to see if Daddy is doing the same - he is. “We’re flying up to the clouds!!!” A few seconds later, one arm descends and munchkin reaches out through the doorframe as if to grasp something. She hands it to me. “Here’s your cloud spoon, daddy!” Daddy takes it. Then she reaches out again and begins scooping imaginary cloud with her imaginary spoon into her mouth. “MMmmmmmmmm!!”

Laughing, I join in. “Hey, clouds are pretty yummy, hunh?”

“Yeah!!”

Wifey and I have no concerns she won’t be an imaginative child, anyway.
