Riley on the Radio

munchkin on Pirate Cat Radio Cafe Open MicHer performing parents are so proud. Last Friday the munchkin and I caught BART out to the city to check out the open mic at Pirate Cat Radio in the Mission. BART is always exciting, but the walk from 24th street to the Pirate Cat Radio Cafe on 21st street was a little bit too far for the munchkin, she ended up riding the last bit on daddy’s shoulders.

Pam interacts with a Performer at the Pirate Cat Radio Cafe Open MicUpon arrival we were delighted to find a friendly, cosy little cafe with a “secret” identity as a pirate radio station. Every Friday from 4-6pm Diamond Dave Whitaker (a San Francisco legend, it must be said), hosts an open mic radio show. My intention was to snap a few photos and see what it was all about, so I snagged a cup of tea an parked the munchkin on a plush couch with a giant oatmeal cookie. A friendly girl with a list approached me, “Are you here to perform?” she asked.

“Oh no, not today, I’m just here to snap a few pics,” I began.

“Oh, does she want to get on the mic?” the girl joked, gesturing at the munchkin. The gesture did not go unnoticed and the munchkin’s face emerged from behind her giant cookie.

“I wanna . . .” a thoughtful pause ensued as her brain considered the new phrase, “get . . . onna mic!”

“Does she want to sing?” the girl asked.

“I could sing THE ABC’S!!!!!” muchkin exclaimed in a spray of oatmeal cookie.

And so it was. Hey, it’s never too early to encourage your children in creative expression, right?

Check out her rendition of the alphabet song at around 1:13:52 on the radio station’s podcast file:
